At 411 feet, Whitewater Falls is the highest series of falls east of the Mississippi. These, known locally as the upper falls, are just north of the NC/SC border. A few miles SE down the Whitewater River are the lower falls where the river empties into Lake Jocassee. This photo was taken from a rock outcropping down a steep cliff from the normal lookout, and about 1/2 mile from the falls. The trees framing the falls are right in front of me. The rock in the foreground is what I stood on. Obviously, I lacked the courage to lean far enough forward to capture the very bottom of the falls.
